Braebon Medical’s MediByte The Apnea and Snoring Home Sleep Recorder
Our Editor spoke with Richard A. Bonato, Ph.D., Founder & Chief Executive Officer of BRAEBON Medical Corporation about their Home Sleep Testing Technology.
What do you think about the proposed CMS technology requirements for Portable Home Sleep Monitoring?
As most people are aware, Braebon has been in the home sleep testing marketplace for about five years now and our technology perfectly aligns with the proposed CMS requirements. We have been promoting our perfect portable couple, MediPalm and MediByte for over a year now. The MediPalm is unparalleled technology as far as a combined level-1/level-2 full PSG recorder is concerned. The MediByte is a powerful and very easy-to-use level-3 snoring/sleep apnea screener. It has been on the market now for over a year and has been received with great fanfare. The challenge regarding portable home sleep testing is that you have to design a product that is extremely easy to use, not just for the medical professional, but particularly for the patient in the home environment. This represents some unique challenges and I believe the MediByte is a product that addresses those unique challenges. It is an ultra small recorder with advanced capabilities and is sold with powerful and simple-to-use point-and-click software. We at Braebon consider the MediByte a recipe for success in the new emerging market of home sleep testing.
How does the MediByte meet the proposed CMS requirements?
As a sophisticated level-3 screener, the MediByte exceeds the proposed CMS requirements for a level-3 home sleep tester. The MediByte can record audio all night long and you can play back that audio. This makes you feel like you are in the room observing the patient. Because you can hear their snoring and arousals we’ve had clinicians report back and tell us that the MediByte is so sensitive they can precisely identify the moment that “lights out†begins because the patient will turn off the television or radio. The MediByte has an internal pulse oximeter, internal differential pressure transducer, 2 channels of respiratory effort, body position sensor and you can use it as a 24-hour EKG holter monitor, or to record muscle activity or snoring sounds. You can record 2 consecutive nights of snoring/sleep apnea so it is a very powerful product in an extremely small footprint, which just adds to the comfort of the patient while they are using it at night in the convenience of their own bed. It is very simple-to-use; so from that perspective, we consider that the MediByte not only meets the CMS requirements, but also exceeds them, resulting in a reliable and high quality home sleep testing product.
Who should use the MediByte?
The MediByte was designed for a variety of healthcare practitioners. We designed the Medibyte to be used by the traditional sleep laboratory that wants to do home sleep testing for your garden variety OSA. We also designed the MediByte to be used by Dentists, Cardiologists, and ENT physicians. Because we had that original design plan in place when we started this product, we put in technology such as the ability to sample snoring at a very fast sampling rate and play it back. You can perform fast Fourier transformations on the snoring/audio channels in part of the MediByte. In addition, we have also designed the MediByte to be a 24-hour EKG recorder. This means you can record your complete PQRST complex for 24 hours and use that for evaluating cardiac activity during sleep. You can use the MediByte as a traditional snoring/sleep apnea screener, or as a titration monitor for oral appliance therapy. It is a perfect device for Dentists and ENT physicians who want to determine the efficacy of their surgical treatments or their implant treatments, which is another option for use. So we have really addressed a variety of target markets with this one product.
Is it easy to train technicians and patients to use the product?
The answer is yes, of course it is. However, the fundamental requirement for home sleep testing is not the ease-of-use for just the technicians, but more importantly, the ease-of-use for the patient. The MediByte was designed with elegant simplicity in mind. For example, no two connectors are identical on the actual recorder, which means that the untrained layperson could easily hook themselves up after minimal training by a healthcare professional such as a nurse, a sleep technologist, or a dental assistant. That is the key difference with many of the products that are on the market. Many companies that are trying to sell home sleep testing equipment designed the sleep product for the sleep technician or the medical professional in mind. In reality, to be a successful product for the home sleep-testing environment, it is fundamentally essential that the product is designed for ease-of-use for the home patient who is not familiar with this product, and if they cannot hook themselves up before bedtime you are fighting an uphill battle.
What impact do you think the product will have on ambulatory home testing?
Our patent-pending MediByte has already been making a substantial impact on the home sleep testing market on five continents. We have been shipping the product for over a year now and our data has shown pretty fantastic validity and reliable metrics. The impact we see is that we have a product that is not only the world’s smallest snoring sleep apnea recorder, but is designed in such a way to make it easy-to-use for Dentists, ENT physicians, Cardiologists, traditional sleep laboratories, and for the patient. From this perspective, we see this product as leading the pack as far as product offerings, and it extends the diagnosis of snoring and sleep apnea into the community.
Describe a favorite technology feature
One of the advantages of the MediByte is the technology. The product records and plays back the audio and the snoring sounds, so you can derive the level of volume from the recording and that is all in a plug-and-play scenario in the software which comes with the product. We have some clinicians today, for example, who are using the MediByte for follow-ups with their oral appliance patients and they will actually have the patient sit down and listen to the snoring both at baseline and at follow-up so the patient can hear first-hand the improvement using the oral appliance. This, in turn, reinforces the entire treatment and monitoring process. From this perspective, the MediByte is used not only for diagnostic and titration purposes, but also as part of your therapeutic program to reinforce patient therapy.
